Celebration at Grosvenor House, London

Summer 2008 saw the completion of ReadonSmith’s seven-year project at Grosvenor House and, to mark this milestone, the company held a reception at the hotel co-hosted by the owners, Royal Bank of Scotland, and the operators, Marriott. Some 120 guests, members of Hotel Property Network and colleagues from the project team, attended the occasion, held in one of the hotel’s function suites overlooking Hyde Park which — a rarity in the English summer of 2008 — was bathed in evening sunshine. Champagne flowed and cooking stations around the rooms allowed chefs to display their culinary skills in the cooking of a wide range of delicious foods.

Commenting before the event, hotel manager Simon Traynor said: “Thanks to a multi-million pound refurbishment programme, which has seen all areas of the hotel undergo major renovation, the hotel has truly been restored to its former glory. It is a joy to be representing such an iconic building that has been sympathetically renovated and yet meets the demands of the modern day traveller. Grosvenor House is clearly positioned as the flagship property in Europe, culminating in the ultimate re-branding to the first JW Marriott in the region.”

For the project team, that included Gardiner & Theobald, Roger Preston, GA Design, RPW Design, Hotel Interior Design, EE Smith and Beck Interiors, the evening was a well-deserved celebration after many years' hard work. Mick Youens, ReardonSmith’s senior associate who led the project team, summed up the experience: “It confirmed for me that major refurbishments, especially of live hotels, are much more demanding than new-build hotels. However, they do bring a singular reward — that of ensuring that a world-renowned hotel legend retains its place as a hotel of choice for both business and leisure.”
