| Sleep.05 In 2005, for the fourth year running, ReadonSmith was the Foundation Sponsor of the European Hotel Design Awards, Conference and Exhibition, now re-badged as Sleep by its new owners, Mondiale. The only event of its kind in Europe, Sleep.05 was a 48-hour celebration of hotel design, development and architecture, bringing together some 150 conference delegates and over 650 dinner guests at Old Billingsgate Market in November. The Conference Speakers included such famous names from the world of design as Karim Rashid, Ilse Crawford, Paul Priestman and Yasmine Mahmoudieh as well as pace setting hotel operators, including Robin Hutson, Robert Cook and Gerard Greene, and assorted entrepreneurs, amongst whom Barbara Cassani was a rousing speaker. Patrick Reardon joined a panel with Kevin Scholl of WAT&G, Jean-Paul Blissett of The Syntax Group and James Lohan of the Mr & Mrs Smith guides to explore whether European resorts could, or indeed should, compete with those in more exotic locations. They agreed that resort development in the East tended to be more enlightened and sympathetic to its environment than in Europe. Patrick Reardon was especially scornful of the architecture that blights Spain’s coastline and was joined by Kevin Scholl in a plea to the industry to do better in the future. James Lohan, however, perceived some shift in balance towards greater environmental sensitivity and Jean-Paul Blissett pointed out that some European resorts have migrated towards more capital intensive but more environmentally sound concepts. The Awards The Awards Dinner, co-hosted by Patrick Reardon and Barry Cryer, marked the achievement of nine winners and a number of short listed entries. Winning entries were: Best Architecture (New Build) – Casa Del Mar, Corsica Best Architecture (Conversion) – Kruisheren, Maastricht Best Interior Design (Public Areas) – Semiramis, Athens Best Interior Design (Bedrooms) – Hotel du Vin, Henley The Judges Award – Casa Camper, Barcelona The Test of Time Award – Blakes, London The Outstanding Achievement Award – Jean-Louis and Gilbert Costes The ReardonSmith Student Award – Alessia Fallica of The Politecnico Di Milano The Sleep.05 Hotel Design of the Year – Casa Del Mar, Corsica The ReardonSmith Student Award The fourth ReardonSmith Student Award was for the best design of a small hotel bedroom and bathroom and enjoyed a greater response than ever before from across the Continent. The submissions were by and large of a very high standard, showing innovation, detailed thought and a good deal of hard work. The winner was Alessia Fallica of The Politecnico Di Milano. Speaking at the Awards ceremony, Patrick Reardon said: “We were greatly impressed by Alessia’s clarity of thought and the simplicity and economy of her design, turning the conventional scheme of bedroom with en suite bathroom on its head to create essentially a bathroom with en suite bedroom. With some further development, this is a buildable room.” However, because it was simply so delightful and made the judges laugh, ReardonSmith created a one-off “Highly Commended” category for one of the other entries, the “Pick ‘n Click” room designed by a team from the Faculty of Architecture in Bratislava, Slovakia. “Commercially unviable perhaps and taking part of its inspiration from a Playstation game, the room is nevertheless the ultimately flexible solution to providing totally different guest experiences. From the Mafia Room, to the One Night Stand Room, to the Celebrity Room and the Insanity Room – all in one clip-together space.” Alessia received a cheque for 750 euros from ReardonSmith.
