In 2006, ReardonSmith gained planning consent for a contemporary extension to the listed Down Hall Country House Hotel located on the Hertfordshire/Essex border in 110 acres of woodland, parkland and gardens.
The new building, which was to accommodate a spa, was to stand apart from the main property but be connected at ground floor level to the main bedroom wing. The scheme envisaged a building with two quite different sides: a “silent” aspect clad in natural stone and nestling in the ground and, on the other side, a building that opened up to look over the historic, formal landscape of the gardens. The internal layout was arranged as three major components with two “silent” stone blocks anchoring, in the centre, a timber and glass spine.
The successful proposal also included the re-introduction of an orangery alongside the hotel entrance, referring back to a Victorian structure that had once stood there, which would be linked to the main building and provide an elegant function space.
