ReardonSmith’s seven-year refurbishment programme at Grosvenor House in Park Lane is nearing completion. The practice was responsible for leading the team handling this £90 million project, probably London’s largest hotel re-building project ever undertaken while the property remained operational. The banqueting spaces, meeting rooms and ground floor public areas have all been redesigned, the building’s exterior has been refurbished and two large, cantilevered glass canopies now soar over the main entrance forecourt which has been ramped and re-paved in granite. Most of the 450 guestrooms have now been refurbished, with the balance due for completion shortly; there will shortly be a new restaurant/brasserie and, in the final phase, a luxury health club. ReardonSmith’s programme also included major back-of-house works to bring the services infrastructure up to the highest levels of efficiency and health & safety.
The scale and scope of the project have been substantial for ReardonSmith, made more complex by the impact of hotel operations on work phasing and site management as well as significant changes to the design brief due to a change in operator. The practice has maintained a team of up to 10 staff on site and has administered five separate contracts. Grosvenor House has been branded a JW Marriott.
