ReardonSmith has designed a new resort village for Puglia, the once remote “heel” of Southern Italy. It is being planned along the lines of the traditional gated communities, or masserie, that used to exist in this area and will be called Masseria Masciola. Work on site has now begun and, when completed, Masseria Masciola will be one of the largest new resorts to have been developed in Puglia over the last 30 years.
The Practice’s research into the history and architecture of the area helped point the way to the overall schematic values: a resort comprising three entities that correspond to the elements of the traditional masserie. These are: a hotel with leisure and conference facilities that will form a hub in the way of a municipal centre or church, a village with apartments and shops designed to reflect the “closed” architecture of many small Italian villages, and villas located at the farthest edge of the site on an elevated “cortina” overlooking the site.
