Porto Montenegro
Creating a new superyacht marina destination
Porto Montenego, the glamorous new marina destination masterplanned and designed by ReardonSmith, welcomed its first residents, visitors and superyachts in the summer of 2010, and the practice is now working on Phase Two of the project.
Dubbed "The new port of cool" by the Financial Times and hailed as the "Jewel in Montenegro's crown" by the Montenegrin Minister of Tourism, the first phase of Porto Montenegro included 60,000 sq m of waterfront apartments and luxury residences, restaurants, cafés and a first-class, 350-berth marina with associated facilities for superyachts and smaller craft. Just three years before, the area, located in the Bay of Kotor, had been the site of a decommissioned naval base with deserted buildings and a rusting infrastructure. The new architectural schemes referenced traditional local architecture together with the urban planning principles of "place legibility" to create a unique resort for holidaymakers, a home for crews and their families and a destination for local people year-round. The result is a small town that whilst clearly within the local design vernacular is genuinely new and suited to modern lifestyles.
Phase Two is currently focused on the design of a luxury hotel with residences and meanwhile construction of additional apartments has continued apace. All the completed units are sold; some 75% of apartments nearing completion have also been sold off-plan. Future plans for Porto Montenegro include a casino and new leisure amenities as well as additional retail areas, restaurants and bars and accommodation.
