ReardonSmith worked with a major Spanish developer and hotel operator, DeVere, designing a master plan for a new resort on a 107-hectare site in Murcia, Spain, to be built alongside 1800 new residences. At the centre of the scheme, a 150-room hotel acted as the public centre of a village with a wide range of restaurants, bars and retail, a spa, kids club and an 18-hole golf course complete with a large clubhouse. In addition, the hotel also provided extensive banqueting facilities. The overall concept was to “break down” the substantial hotel and leisure component, creating a low-rise village of small clusters of guestrooms, each grouped around a central courtyard while the leisure facilities were carefully located to meet the sometimes differing requirements of hotel guests and local residents. The design style was influenced by local haciendas, differentiating the resort from the international look of other such developments in the area.
