Santa Rosa,
Italy
Converting an historic gem into an utterly luxurious hotel retreat
For several years, ReardonSmith led the team working to convert Sanctuary Santa Rosa, a 15th Century monastery perched high on a cliff top above the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy, into one of the world’s most discreetly luxurious resort hotels and spa. The Practice’s approach to the project was born out of the original brief that called for a seamless coming together of Santa Rosa’s powerful monastic inheritance with the finest of classical and contemporary features and facilities.
The planning process was complex. Santa Rosa is a National Historic Monument on a UNESCO protected site, and ReardonSmith had to work intensively with numerous Italian organisations to make an incontrovertible case for the development. Consent to convert the property into a 25 guestroom hotel was gained, and ReardonSmith subsequently handed over to a local practice.
